Description
The Sandlot meets The Wonder Years in The Fireball Kid - the story of 12-year-old Danny Voss, a South Side Chicago kid growing up in the racially charged mid '60s.
All Danny dreams about is playing baseball for the Chicago White Sox when he grows up, but 1964 presents some serious obstacles: The toughest teaching nuns in the Chicago Archdiocese. The Little League team and coach from Hell. A major crush on beautiful, big-haired Gloria. Plus, a well meaning but extremely frugal father, a younger sister who wants to be a priest and a mother that thinks Danny's road to the Major Leagues is paved with her meatloaf.
Except for surviving a secret trip to Riverview, the world's most dangerous amusement park, the summer of 1964 is hardly going Danny's way. But quicker than a Sandy Koufax fastball, Danny is flush with cash after taking a part-time clandestine job working for Willis, a charismatic black man who lures suckers to Riverview's "African Dip" attraction. Danny's rep as the Fireball Kid earns him a spot on the Monarchs - an all black inner city ball team Willis manages. It's not long before the Fireball Kid finds himself playing in the game of his life with his big league dreams and his best friend's life on the line.
"The Fireball Kid is a hilarious and moving coming-of-age story that feels as good as spending a day at your favorite ballpark with a couple of best friends and a few cold beers."
-Matt Iseman, host of "Sports Soup" and "Clean House."
