Description
Powerful poems zealously advocate strength of spirit through subjugation and hardship. Nadia Scrieva's work exhibits a wide spectrum of emotions; from tender, nurturing feelings to violent yearnings for vengeance. Her writing is characterized by using extreme hyperbole of distances and time, in addition to finding meaning in the tiniest details such as pixels or fallen pennies.
The book is organized by an overarching metaphor of the self as a natural resource. It is raw in its most natural state, and beautiful and capable--but through the refining processes of pain, injustice, and disappointment, the self can transform itself into something magnificent. The finished, improved self is finally sold and exploited once more for relationships and love. Many of the poems have spiritual elements, where the speaker seeks solace from divine connections. Nadia uses many metaphors of art, comparing the individual to a painting or sculpture in progress.
Her writing is often cynical and sarcastic with regard to the fleeting nature of relationships, but ultimately hopeful and enthusiastic regarding the vivacity and faculties of the individual and their spirit.
