Four teenaged girls become friends and allies, providing believable alibis for each other that get them out of the house; away from distracted and indifferent parents; parents struggling to live their lives in an unnatural way; lives that include children, which was never what they wanted. They had caved; under pressure from families under the spell of a changing culture still geared to traditional protocol; i.e., doing what's right. For them, personal preference or comfort never really got into the equation.

The girls are who they are: one is of mixed blood, one favors high drama; another is very amply endowed; yet another is the acute fashionista. And Cali is demurely pretty, the product of an unwanted pregnancy. Her parents are both in the picture but the picture is sterile and cold. She wishes she'd been born instead to Dr. and Mrs. Seuss. Trinity is the one who reads volumes, in hopes of a crack at college.

What began as innocent recreation for the foursome becomes an ingrained habit as together they drink, smoke pot and use other drugs to soften the reality into which they were born.

Their merry-go-round of life continually circles, but gold rings are scarce.
They are suddenly witnesses of a murder, then discover another, a cherished loved one has perished. Fear then becomes the driver of their every thought and plan.

As each holds to her own picture of what could be, and how the future looks from where she stands, the future is unfolding beneath their feet.
