BAD VIBES: (Romantic Thriller) (THE EDGE OF TEXAS Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

Darla came on deck clad in black body armor, her copper top hidden under a black Sheriff’s Department cap with the bill turned backwards. She had her M-14 slung over her shoulder and a pack of extra magazines.
Damn! She looks so hot! Like Badass Barbie…

5 ***** Review~ “J.D. creates two characters in Mike and Darla that you'll be rooting for while simultaneously ratcheting up the suspense to the breaking point. The Texas Coast will *never* be the same by the time these two get done…”

When government agent Mike “The Iceman” Burke invades her South Padre Island turf, Deputy Darla Calhoun is assigned as liaison officer to his team. Her skills as a sniper come in handy when a gang of human traffickers strikes close to home, kidnapping local women including her best friend.

Darla is recovering from her husband’s suicide and trying to be a good parent to her twin sons. The ICE assignment takes her out of her misery and plunges her into a dangerous mission and a steamy affair.

Mike and Darla tear up and down the Intracoastal Waterway in search of the kidnappers and the captive women while Rafael and Javier conduct their own investigation. Will they rescue the captive women or will the kidnappers slaughter them as they have done in the past? Two teams race to find the answers before it's too late.

J.D. Faver lives near Houston, Texas. She writes steamy contemporary romance and romantic thrillers/mystery/suspense. She loves to kill people...on virtual paper, that is. Although she writes daily, she still finds time to enjoy family and friends. She is a foodie and an adventurous cook. Determined to preserve generations of family recipes, she is publishing a series of cookbooks entitled A Texan in the Kitchen.

Gardening is another passion (and linked to the food thing) since she has an orchard of fruit trees and berry bushes/vines in her back yard. Tomatoes and other veggies round out her kitchen garden.

All other interests (painting, drawing, sewing, quilting, crocheting, weaving, stained glass and pottery) have taken a back seat since they require hands-on participation which is difficult if your fingers are always on the keyboard.

An active member of several Houston writer's organizations, she belongs to National RWA and is a member of Houston chapters.

She is owned by two cats and a small, yappy rescue dog. As a former educator and healthcare professional, she is an advocate for children, animals and elderly/disabled individuals.

She would rather be sailing or on a beach somewhere, but if not, you can probably find her with her fingers on a keyboard, pouring word images onto the virtual films playing in her head.

The young widow, Deputy Darla Calhoun mistakenly busts undercover ICE Special Agent Mike Burke, who is posing as a vagrant in order to watch activity along the waterfront. Darla hauls him in to headquarters, has him strip and take a shower. Imagine the embarrassment when she later learns who he really is. Mike, too, has to suffer some serious ribbing for allowing that mite of a girl to take him in. The attraction between the two blossoms when Darla is assigned to work with Mike on his mission to uncover a suspected human trafficking ring, believed to be operating on the Gulf of Mexico and along the Intercoastal waterway. As such they spend days and nights patrolling the Gulf together within the confines of a small pleasure boat. Many of the characters we have loved, from Books 1 and 2 of the series, appear again in this tale. It is good to meet Darla’s friends and family again and learn what they are doing these days. Plenty of action, and suspense, is spiced with sizzling romance. Highly recommended for romantic thriller lovers.

Although I enjoyed this book, it was a little too heavy on the sex. I wish it had had more plot action. I finished the book before I finally had to "google" ICE man to learn that Mike Burke was an Immigration & Customs Enforcement agent. I liked that he was paired up with a local law enforcement officer who was an expert marksman, but was a bit disappointed to find the marksman was a woman with the name "Darla." I found myself more interested in the kidnap victim Cassie, a self-described nerd, very smart (was in college by age 15) and caring high school teacher, who appeared very self-conscious and timid, married (but a terrible cook), who really liked being taken care of by her macho husband. Oh, and yes, Cassie has black belts in several different martial arts and gives her captors fits after she is kidnapped!

Cassie provided half of the plot action, while Darla and Mike provided the romance half. I liked that Darla and Mike didn't spend a lot of time teasing or yearning for each other, but there's not a lot of variety to their encounters. And poor Cassie had to endure a really long wait before just barely being rescued.

The plot really fits in Texas, where high school football is often considered more important than a high school education. A football player who thinks it's OK to kill a teacher who doesn't give a passing grade to him no longer seems ridiculous in this day and age. So the good ending was most satisfactory, both the criminal one and the romance one. While not outstanding, BAD VIBES was definitely a good read.

I've loved all the Bad novels, and it looks like J.D. Faver saved the best for last. But first of all, Bad Vibes, had the cutest "meet cute" I've ever read, so you couldn't help but love the main characters, Mike and Darla, right off the bat. To enhance the continuity of the town, many of the characters from the rest of the series are very present in this book, all intertwined with each other. Under difficult circumstances, Mike and Darla's love story begins and continues realistically - and hotly. The action goes fast in some places and more slowly in others which is also realistic in actual police work. So, Bad Vibes has just about everything you could want in a novel - suspense, danger, love, humor, and genuine emotions. And did I say love scenes? I highly recommend this book!

The southern coast of Texas aka The Edge of Texas finds Darla wrapped in a treacherous human trafficking situation with federal agent Mike "The Ice Man". As danger mounts, so does the heat between Darla and Mike, as they pursue the traffickers up the Intracoastal Waterway. They try to stay alive long enough to arrest the kingpins.

This follows
Bad Medicine:The Edge of Texas~Bk I (Romantic Thriller)  and  Bad Karma: The Edge of Texas-Bk 2 (Romantic Thriller) . Rafael is back and working with the federal agents, but he doesn't want to lose his best sharpshooter Darla. JD Faver's fast-paced style will draw a reader in and keep them turning pages. A real must read for anyone who loves suspense with their romance.

I liked the book, but a MAJOR plot point was so wrong that it ruined the story for me. ***WARNING SPOILER ALERT*** Specifically, while the female lead character, Darla, was a strong female that could hold her own professionally, apparently her life is such a mess, that within a week or two of meeting and sleeping with Mike, she was able to get knocked up, have morning sickness and all the other pregnancy stuff, and after Mike is gone for 3 months, still marry him (in a formal wedding) while only being "almost 4 months pregnant." Whaaattt? What kind of pregnancy do these Texas women have? It was so ludicrous, I could barely finish the book, despite all the other good parts of the book. Seriously, it would not have been hard for the character to find out she was pregnant after they finished working together..........

This is a very engaging book. The characters are appealing, there are enough twists and turns in the story to maintain interest, and it is all topped off with hot romance. There are a few more errors in the text than I would like to find, but not a horrible amount of them. Sure, there are parts of the story that are unrealistic, but what are we doing reading fiction other than engaging in a willing suspension of disbelief? It does not take the less than realistic elements so far as to be intrusive. I recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading others by this author.

Unlike one of the other readers, I did not find reading a book 3 of a series to be uncomfortable. Sure there were references to things that happened in previous stories, but this story was separate and complete in itself.

I really liked the story and the only fault I could find was that the two characters were obviously in love but couldn't figure out a way to stay together. Eventually it all worked out, but it kind of detracted from the story as far as I am concerned.

Overall, I recommend this to any that likes a good action story.

This book was brilliant, as there was a perfect balance between the amount of romance and suspense that left you wondering what was going to happen. This is a great story that follows a number of characters, best read in sequence. The story is for all lovers of romantic suspense.

This is a slick fast action thriller about human trafficking. Mike the federal agent battles against the odds, and you're rooting for him all the way.
