I promessi sposi di Alessandro Manzoni è considerato il più importante ed il primo romanzo della letteratura italiana e l'opera letteraria più rappresentativa del Risorgimento italiano e del romanticismo italiano nonché una delle massime opere della letteratura italiana.
Ambientato dal 1628 al 1630 in Lombardia durante l'occupazione spagnola, fu il primo esempio di romanzo storico della letteratura italiana. Benché l'ambientazione fosse stata scelta da Manzoni con l'evidente intento di alludere al dominio austriaco sul nord Italia, il romanzo è anche noto per l'efficace descrizione di alcuni episodi storici del XVII secolo, soprattutto dell'epidemia di peste del 1629-1631.
Il romanzo di Manzoni viene considerato non solo una pietra miliare della letteratura italiana, ma anche un passaggio fondamentale nella nascita stessa della lingua italiana. È una delle letture obbligate del sistema scolastico italiano ed è la fonte di molte espressioni entrate nell'uso comune della lingua.
Dal punto di vista strutturale è il primo romanzo moderno della letteratura italiana. L'opera ebbe anche un'enorme influenza nella definizione di una lingua nazionale italiana.

"I promessi sposi" (The Betrothed) by Alessandro Manzoni is considered the most important and the first novel in Italian literature, the piece of literature more representative of the Italian Risorgimento and the Italian romanticism and one of the greatest works of Italian literature.
Set from 1628 to 1630 in Lombardy during the Spanish occupation, was the first example of a historical novel in Italian literature. Although the setting was chosen by Manzoni with the evident intention of alluding to the Austrian rule of northern Italy, the novel is also known for the effective description of some historical events of the seventeenth century, especially the plague of 1629-1631.
Manzoni's novel is not only considered a cornerstone of Italian literature, but also a fundamental step in the birth of the Italian language. It is a must-read in the Italian school system and is the source of many expressions in common usage of the language.
From a structural standpoint it is the first modern novel in Italian literature. The work also had an enormous influence in establishing a national language.
