Surlee Paulin is one of 500 workers at a camp that is ruled by the Haldon, the world power in the 23rd century. Each worker must swallow the contents of a ration cylander each morning. This cylander contains nutrients as well as disease preventatives, sexual distimulants and cerebral pacifiers to ensure a productive work day.
On this morning, Surlee does not injest the ration cylander. Her task for the day is to kill unfortunates. The unfortunates were the socially weak and the uncivilized. Because Sarlee did not take the morning ration cylander, she did not get the cerebral pacifier the other worker received. Sarlee noticed an unfortunate and was quickly moved by the attraction he showed her.
