Description

Irish Ancestors is a series of Books which takes Irish family names and tells the stories of some of their most notable members.

This Book tells the Story of one Irish member of the O'Hanlon clan, Redmond O'Hanlon who lived in Ireland in the late 17th Century. The son of a noble Gaelic family who had been dispossessed of their lands by the British, O'Hanlon through circumstance and his own indomitable character, became a bandit, some would say a freedom fighter or in the Irish a Rapparee. Known as Count Redmond O'Hanlon, or Captain O'Hanlon he has become a central figure in the folk memory of what is now the Armagh border country. His story is told around peat fires to the disbelieving, as drams are served out and the past put to rights. He has become the stuff of ballads, folk songs and even children's' rhymes. With every re-telling the story has become a little wilder and a little more implausible. However, as is often the case, the true story of the man's life is in many ways even more impressive than many of the legends.

In this book we also provide a brief historical context so that readers might see and understand how a man like O'Hanlon could become Captain O'Hanlon the Irish Rapparee.

This book is one of a series of titles about distinguished members of the O'Hanlon family. We hope that it brings a little light to those who seek to understand Redmond O'Hanlon and the times he lived in.
