His story is told around peat fires to the disbelieving, as drams are served out and the past put to rights. He has become the stuff of ballads, folk songs and even children's' rhymes. With every re-telling the story has become a little wilder and a little more implausible. However, as is often the case, the true story of the man's life is in many ways even more impressive than many of the legends.

In this book we also provide a brief historical context so that readers might see and understand how a man like O'Hanlon could become Captain O'Hanlon the Irish Rapparee.
