Description
It was no longer a set of sterile, grey vinyl stairs in a hospital wing. It was like an echo in time, a slow descent down a corridor in time, the date set at 31st January 2003, to be exact. As we descended the hospital steps, Dad whispered in my ear. It was a strained whisper, as if the words would barely pass between his lips; saying it would only make it real. I can still remember that moment as if it were yesterday. "She's gone," was all he could manage.
By the age of 22, Rob was effectively an orphan. An event just over a decade ago would trigger a story of alcohol abuse, addiction, death and destruction in his family - a story that had largely been untold, until now.
Here, Rob explains for the first time how that story unfolded, how alcohol abuse and addiction tore at the fabric of his family, leaving himself and his brother picking up the pieces of a bitter and tumultuous battle with the bottle.
Updated for 2014 with a brand new chapter, providing Rob's renewed perspectives on alcoholism following the birth of his own child this year.
A light yet compelling read at 67,000 words approx. Contains some strong language.
