The seven sermons collected together in this little book were
preached by Dr. John Kennedy (1819-1884), who was minister at
Dingwall, in the Scottish Highlands, for over forty years. He is
widely regarded as one of the best and most well-loved ministers
of nineteenth century Scotland. The sermons are warm
expositions of the pathway of the Lord's people, pointing them
not to dwell on self, but to look to the Lord Jesus Christ alone for

The title of the volume is based on the sermon preached on: "If
the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the
sinner appear?" (1 Peter 4: 18). Dr. Kennedy explains the child of
God's experience of "a scarce salvation" in this way:

"The word "scarcely" does not point to any defect in the
salvation, but to the experience of trial which those who are
saved must have while the work of their salvation is advancing.
They pass on their way to the kingdom "through great
tribulation." At the beginning this shall be their experience,
towards the end of their journey it shall be so, and they cannot
expect immunity from trouble at any stage of their course."

Preaching of the experience of "a scarce salvation" is rarer today
than it should be, consequently we warmly commend these
sermons to you.
