Plato, Greek: ??????, lived from 424/423 BC to 348/347 BC. Along with Socrates, Plato's works mark the transition from Pre-Socratic "Hellenistic" Greek philosophy (Odyssey, Iliad, and other works) to the Socratic Greeks, the latter of which the Western world often looks towards as its origin. Plato was also a mathematician, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the "first institution of higher learning in the Western world". Plato, as well as his student Aristotle, are referenced or taken account for in nearly every major philosophical work. Writers from Descartes to Kant, Nietzsche to Merleau-Ponty, all regard the perspectives of Plato. A must read for anyone interested in philosophy or the evolution of human thought.
