The year is 1950 and Joe Masters is a thirteen year old boy living in a village called Hempstead. Joe's father fought in the Second World War where he received a terrible back injury and lost the use of his legs. Joe's mother works in a grocery shop in the village trying to make ends meet and brings home extra food whenever she can. Joe has a great interest in aeroplanes.

One day he gets caught by Flight Sergeant Colin Smale when trying to sneak into the nearby RAF base and climb onto an old Skytrain aircraft. One night Joe notices a fiery trail shooting across the sky, whatever it is shoots over the house and Joe realizes that it has crashed close to the airbase. Joe races to the scene and rescues an injured alien who lies in the wreckage of the space vehicle. Joe manages to move him to the shelter of the old Skytrain that is parked close to the crash scene. Joe's life now completly changes as he and the alien are transported into space inside the Skytrain, when a starship from the planet Zilan comes to the rescue. On board the ship Joe becomes very worried when he notices that the Skytrain is being dismantled. He later finds out that the rebuilt Skytrain will be able to fly in space as well as Earth's atmosphere.

From that moment Joe's life changes for ever:-
