Compiled and Edited by Charles W. Eliot LL D in 1909, the Harvard Classics is a 51-volume Anthology of classic literature from throughout the history of western civilization. The set is sometimes called "Eliot's Five-Foot Shelf."
Volume 40 is the first of three dedicated to English poets and they are presented chronologically. This volume starts with Geoffrey Chaucer (approx 1343 - 1400) and ends with Thomas Gray (1716 - 1771).

This book has undergone a revision in the way the footnotes/endnotes were structured for the longer poems. Rather than placing all notes (sometimes as many as 400) at the end of the poem, they now appear along side the appropriate lines of the poem.
