Description
A Bad Place To Die by Stephen Williams
The underlying premise of the "novel of childhood" genre is to illustrate the "loss" or the "death" of the child leading to the "birth" of the young adult. Often, the transition is fictionalised in a dramatic or a violent way. Here, the genre is reimagined as a thriller.
When he says goodnight, you will never see morning again.
The newspapers call him The Goodnight Man but, for Robert Lansing, this killer is a vicious and calculating menace who must be eliminated from their community. Murder is relatively unheard of in this city and now Lansing must defeat the horror of a serial killer before he can retire from the police and embark upon an academic research career.
Opening with a graphic description of the death of a teenager and the disappearance of another, Logan Parry, A Bad Place To Die follows an inept and inexperienced police investigation into a killing spree that puts a city in fear and Logan's life in danger. Each day is a nightmare for the parents who wait for news of their missing children and this novel portrays a world where few dare to roam and even less return unscathed as fear becomes the executioner of the soul.
Whether boys are playing in the park, crossing the road or even asleep in their beds at home, it seems that none of them are safe from the hunger of this serial killer. The police have no idea even where to begin their investigation and Robert Lansing is tired of fighting crime. He is out of his depth and, even though he calls in a specialist criminal investigator trained in hunting serial killers, he sends his own officers into danger.
What could cause an intelligent man to turn to murder? Why has he begun killing now, and in this area? Why are only the boys not safe on these streets? Lansing has no idea and so can only watch as each new body is discovered.
For Ricky, though, the time of his greatest achievement is at hand. And when he says goodnight to his victims, it is only the beginning of a horror still to be unleashed as we wait for him to return to the house where Logan is waiting, still unaware of what has been happening.
Parental guidance, this book contains adult material, including sex and the brutal torture and murder of victims.
