Description

What greater motive for murder can a general have than ambition to be King?

Macbeth's grim desire to reign was stirred up by the three witches prophesy, and goaded on by his cold-blooded wife!
But suspicion fell upon Macbeth, tormenting him with fear, driving him to murder again, and again!
He might have escaped the consequences of his brutal crimes had he chosen to flee. Instead, he charged madly into the field of battle to meet an enemy whose sword was keen for vengeance!

Amazing as this tale may seem, Shakespeare gathered it from true accounts of the reigns of Duncan and Macbeth, (A.D. 1034 - 1057) as given in Holinshed's "Historie of Scotland."
Macbeth or Macbethad was a Celtic King of Scotland, whose reign began in 1040, and lasted for 17 years.
He slew King Duncan, his predecessor, and was himself slain at Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire in 1057.
The name was originally a personal one, meaning "Lively One" and in modern Gaelic is spelt Macbheatha.
