Description

Death Speaks In Whispers by Stephen Williams

The underlying premise of the "novel of childhood" genre is to illustrate, in different ways, the "loss" or the "death" of childhood leading to the "birth" of the young adult. Often the transition is fictionalised in a dramatic or a violent way. Here, the genre is reimagined in a thriller setting.

When the night grows quiet he will come whispering behind you and then it is too late.

Andrew Stalker is sixteen years old and is hunting out death on the streets of his town. A year has passed since his brother was brutally murdered, the death being linked to a serial killer who has not yet been caught. Andrew blames himself for what happened, believing his parents wanted him to die instead of Kevin. He has become an angry teenager with few friends, alienating everyone with his attitude... and because an aura of loathing and the smell of the grave hangs over him.

One friend, gay teen Alan Turner, wants to help but Alan has a secret of his own that he would prefer no one found out.

Then there is a Whispering. An insistent, paranormal sound rising from some concealed place beneath the heart, from the point of the soul itself.

The central Whisper is Colin, who was murdered long ago but it was too soon for him to leave this existence. All that remains of him now is little more than the mystery of a whisper on the air. He has to wait, suspended in and out of time, until his appointed day to die completely arrives. Colin is angry and cannot rest in peace. He enlists the forces of other Whispers to control the minds of the living, seeking a bloody revenge on a society that allowed them to die too soon.

Andrew had believed that the whispering in his mind was nothing more than the product of his own grief-stricken imagination but he comes to realise that it is far more insidious. The more he listens, the more he learns... and the more Andrew learns, the more afraid he becomes as he gradually realises just how many lives Colin, a serial killer from beyond the grave, will destroy in order to satisfy his thirst for revenge.

But there also is someone else walking these streets after dark, someone alive, someone whose only mission is to leave a trail of death and destruction as he once again passes through this town, unaware of the fear already here as the mystery of Colin and his undead companions remains unsolved.
