Description

"This was an entertaining read, with lots of interesting characters and intriguing
plot developments. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of Cuba and I
thought the author did a good job of evoking the beaches and resorts of Cuba. I
felt I was in the middle of the sultry weather and that made the character's
behaviour and misbehaviour all the more believable. The author intertwined the
parallel story lines very well, between sunny Cuba and snowy Toronto, setting
the reader up for a number of unexpected developments. And he wrapped all the
various threads up to a most satisfying conclusion. Well done!"

"I think I reviewed the first in this series from Anderson, while this is the latest
entry - each one just keeps getting better. Detective Richard McDonald whom we
were introduced to in the last book, appears as an important figure in this
mystery. He is the one on vacation in Cuba, recovering from wounds received
(sort of) in the line of duty. While at a Cuban resort he is asked by fellow
Canadian vacationers to look into the death of one of their travelling
companions. McDonald doesn't get very far in that investigation due to the lack
of cooperation on the part of local authorities, but this is not the end of
that matter. Soon, the reader is back on familiar turf in Canada, in the suburb
of York, to be precise. There, main character and hero of this series,
Detective Sergeant, Nicholas Drumm, is dealing with a number of crimes
committed by a man that the press is calling the Riverwood Rapist. Detective Drumm,
who has his hands full as this criminal continues to elude local police, is
nonetheless, brought up to speed by McDonald, with the particulars of the Cuban
case. Policewoman, Lori Singh, also features prominently in the investigations,
and is eventually used as bait in an attempt to capture the rapist. Familiarity
with the characters and their personal quirks and potential romance (for two of
them) is part of the enjoyment of this story, the rest, of course, is the sheer
fun of reading a well-plotted mystery. Drumm, is as dogged and determined as
ever trying to put an end to this local crime spree, and, yet, the case in Cuba
keeps nagging at the back of his mind. Although told by his new superior (an
old nemesis) to leave it alone, our Drumm is soon bent on sorting out both
cases. Read the earlier books in the series, or not, this one is a good
stand-alone, offering likeable characters, solid writing, and the solution to
two mysteries!"

A young man falls to his death from a balcony at a Cuban resort. Detective Sergeant
Nicholas Drumm, investigating a string of brutal sexual assaults back home in
York, is reluctantly drawn into a suspicious death that happened on foreign
soil. Along the way he battles a cold, Canadian winter, a persistent TV
reporter and an antagonistic superior. The ending is as surprising as it is
believable.
