Description

The first of the Tommy Ellis Trilogy, a coming of age journey of a young school boy to pre-adulthood. In the first novel Tommy goes on a three week fishing trip with his father, a trawler skipper. He is hoping to get to know and, hopefully, form a bond with his father, the man he calls Dad, the man who comes home only for a couple of days every three weeks before going back to sea again. Tommy's first journey takes him beyond the Arctic Circle to the deep sea fishing grounds around Bear Island. He learns to deal with an impatient cook, suspicious crew members, an unusual stowaway, asthma, icebergs, storms, a brief encounter with the Russian Navy, and the dangers on board, including a serious accident involving one of the members of the crew. However, will he re-live the terrible nightmare he has the night before they sail? The second novel of the trilogy is to be published towards the end of 2015. No longer the naive, nervous boy of the previous trip, Tommy Ellis is excited to be sailing once again on board the Stella Vega, skippered by his father. This time, however, his journey takes him across the North Atlantic Ocean to the bitter cold, remote fishing grounds of the Davis Straight, off the west coast of Greenland. Tommy is happy to be reunited with familiar faces and to meet new crew members, but will he get along with a new boy who joins them for the trip? The dangers this time are different to those of the previous trip, the main threats being ice and fog. However, Tommy is enthralled by the beauty of the hostile Polar region, the sight of a Portuguese sailing ship and close encounters with the wildlife. The third novel of the trilogy will be published in 2016. This time a more mature Tommy is employed by the Comapny as Deckie Learner, a real job with a real paypacket, but with real responsibilities. This trip takes him to Iceland, a country which has recently extended its territorial waters and sends naval gunboats out to apprehend trawlers that may be fishing withing the limits.
