Description

The Author, U.C. Berkley takes us back to the time when the Plains Indians, and in particular the Comanche, were in the first stages of being driven from their land by the white settlers. His book is soundly based on fact, but he allows his imagination to flesh out a more complete story for us and to bring all the historical figures to life. This is not a collection of facts, but a warm and often heartbreaking story about the demise of the Comanche Indian from warrior and hunter to having to live within the confines of a Reservation and be dependent on the white man for his everyday living requirements.

The stand out hero of this novel is Chief Quanah Parker, arguably the last Chief of the Comanches. This man, the son of a captured white girl and an Indian Chief, was a man of foresight and managed to make a better life for himself and his people on the land they had been allocated, by 'playing the game the white man's way' and making the best of a seemingly impossible situation that the Comanches found themselves in. I enjoyed the story very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in the plight of the Native American.
