Description
This monograph presents the results of a study designed to improve end-of-life care through the creation of a new training program for nurses' aides, who provide much of the daily hands-on care for individuals nearing the ends of their lives. Toborg Associates conducted this study between September 2004 and March 2005, as a Phase I grant under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). The specific aims of the Phase I project were: (1) To demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a computer-based training (CBT) program around end-of-life care for nurses' aides in rural communities, and (2) to demonstrate a CBT program's capacity to educate nurses' aides with appropriate knowledge to improve their skills in providing care for the terminally ill. To achieve these aims, the Phase I study developed and tested one module, covering communication skills, of the proposed CBT program.
