A SHORT STORY
There's something different about the remote village of Youngstown. Every summer, the entire town can be seen marching to the mountain crest, torches burning against the night sky. There's an old well there, an ancient monstrosity built long ago. There, the entourage curls around the relic they take so much care to preserve.
Mary Messic has had enough of life in Youngstown and desperately wants out. She's exhausted by a community that doesn't understand the true meaning of sacrifice and the basic value of life. As she struggles to make her escape, she's confronted by the townspeople who are so engrossed in tradition, they can't imagine letting her go. Her husband, Joe, will go to any length to make sure she stays to provide him with what he needs to continue as an upstanding citizen.
Jude Anscott holds the special designation of the Youngstown physician, not because he's qualified but because no one else wants the job. Weary in his efforts to help keep Mary in her place and attending to the medical needs of the community, he too begins to wonder if what the people of Youngstown have spent so much time and energy to preserve is actually worth the sacrifice.
