Andrew Carnegie was full of contradictions. His grandfather and father were both Scottish nationalists and his grandfather was a Socialist. Carnegie was a classic robber baron, but supported the right of workers to unionize--even though his own company hired Pinkertons to shoot strikers at Homestead. He gave away millions of dollars to establish libraries and museums to benefit the poor working classes--but refused to simply raise their pay so they could have a middle-class lifestyle. He was an ardent pacifist who opposed the Spanish-American War and World War One--even though his steel company got rich on military contracts. He was also a passionate anti-imperialist and opposed US colonization of Spanish possessions after the Spanish-American War, going so far as to offer to buy the entire Philippine Island chain from the US so he could grant it independence.
