Description

Western tales by Charles Alden Seltzer, a popular novelist of the early twentieth century. The first selection "The Triangle Cupid" is a collection of short stories. "The Horse Thief" concerns a small rancher who is competing for the hand of a lovely, but self-centered, young lady just returned home from the East. His competitor seems to be winning. In the end the young rancher finds out truths about his lady love and her other suitor. "The Man on the Ridge" is being hunted by a sheriff and his deputy. An opportunity arises for the fugitive to kill his pursuers but it slips out of his hands. He continues running and comes upon a cabin occupied by a young woman and her sick child. As luck would have it it's the sheriff's family. There he's faced with a decision which could determine his fate and that of the youngster. "The Fear" has consumed the young, man all his life. Finally he finds a way to conquer it. But it may only be a temporary solution. "The Special Messenger" is bringing a shipment of gold dust. The owner of an out of the way saloon is hoping to send his savings of the past year with the messenger to safe keeping in the nearest town. The trouble is a stranger has arrived who looks like trouble. When the messenger arrives the two men send the stranger packing and the relieved tavern owner turns over his money for safe keeping to the courier. Or is it?

"The High Card" is held by a rancher who hires a gunman to get rid of a man he suspects of rustling and worse --- who is courting his daughter. Unfortunately the gunman also becomes enamored with the girl who knows why he was hired by her father. "The thief at Circle Bar" is a cowpuncher who's courting the ranch owner's daughter. But her father wants more for her than just a cowboy. He fires the young man and sends the girl away to visit friends. Unfortunately things don't work out quite as he expected. "The Reformation Of Two Gun Harlan" is the intention of the daughter of a rancher who has hired a gunman to get rid of a nester and his family. Her initial feelings of revulsion and disgust with him gradually melt away and she falls in love with him. But then comes the showdown between the gunman and the nester.

"Trouble - Plenty" is what two stage company trouble-shooters find when they come to the rescue of a young lady whose uncle has just been murdered. Romance and gunplay go hand in hand as one of the men finds love and both find all the action they can handle before apprehending a gang of stagecoach robbers.

"The Rustler" is what the manager of the Two Diamond ranch calls a young man who lives in a cabin with his sister in Bear Flat. He comes to Dry Bottom with his range boss and stages a shooting contest. The winner of the contest is hired to eliminate the rustler. The gunman hired is thrown from his horse and bitten by a rattler on his way to the Two Diamond. He finds help in the person of the sister of the accused rustler. Complications arise when she learns the reason he is there. Undaunted the young gunman continues his work until the real rustler is unmasked.
