Description
A tale of intrigue with a background of simmering rebellion, set in British India in the final years of Queen Victoria's reign.
With Russian forces massing along the Afghan border, long term rivals, Lord Holmes-Bartlett, newly appointed as Viceroy, and Grand Duke Raevski, the Tsar's special envoy to India, struggle to gain the ascendancy in their negotiations.
But Lord Holmes-Bartlett does not only have the Russians to contend with, he also has the press, his own officials, and his senior advisers, many harbouring ulterior motives for wanting him replaced by his scheming deputy, Cecil Hinds.
With all eyes focused on playing the 'Great Game'; a famine in the Punjab, a savage tribal attack in Waziristan, a civil war in the seemingly insignificant Province of Putala, and a man-eating tiger in Kalishtan, combine to complicate the situation still further.
In games, where rules are followed and where all that is at stake is personal or national pride, the unfortunate losers invariably offer forward their hands to congratulate the worthy winners. But in 'Great Games', where the winner is the one who has bluffed the most convincingly, or gambled the most effectively, or cheated the most deceitfully, the loser is not usually so gracious. When a 'Great Game' is over, it is invariably only sabres that are shaken.
While on shooting leave from his regiment, Major Charles Stylles unwittingly becomes a key player when he finds himself embroiled in a civil war in Kalishtan.
