Description

London town in 1742 is a lawless place...

The Devil's Agent is two thrilling tales of treachery and treason in one book.

Part One introduces the reader to Balthazar Bloodwine, a thief-taker who has the lean and hungry look of someone who lives by his wits and who trusts no one's judgement but his own. And Bloodwine's world has just become even more dangerous now that he's been blackmailed into working as an undercover agent for the ambitious and unscrupulous Solicitor General, Sir William Murray. Murray sets the thief taker the task of infiltrating and exposing a racket run by a corrupt and very ruthless MP, involving white slavery, prostitution and smuggling.

In Part Two, The Devil's Bargain, Murray decides the thief-taker's debt has still not been paid in full and so, before he is prepared to wipe the slate clean, he insists Bloodwine must uncover the identity of a high-born traitor who is plotting with Murray's own exiled brother, to subvert the government and to overthrow King George. As the action unfolds, Bloodwine has no idea who he can trust, but he is determined that he will not give Murray the satisfaction of watching him dance at the end of a rope.

The Devil's Agent recreates a wonderful world of 18th century licentiousness, with larger-than-life characters.
