Description
Arnold Primer, originally published in 1901, the first steps in reading, to be profitable, should be pleasurable. The earliest lessons should stimulate the child's desire to read. If this desire is aroused, power and skill are assured. Carefully chosen vocabulary, the sentences say something which is interesting and reasonable. Words are presented in sentences. Sounds of letters are introduced as the initial sounds of familiar words. Words not entirely phonetic (for example "beautiful") should be taught by sight, not by sound. The alphabet, in both script and print appears on the pages after the initial sounds have been learned. The ignorance of the alphabet betrayed by children in higher grades justifies its introduction at this point. Here the letters can be best learned in order. 125 pages of text, diagrams and drawings.
