Description
Here Cicero's classic moral treatise, which so profoundly informed both secular and Christian thought, is presented in a newly edited version of Walter Miller's translation. The text was only slightly edited for the benefit of contemporary readers.
Ostensibly addressed to his son, then studying Peripatetic philosophy in Athens, a wider readership was most certainly considered. Cicero argues from the Stoic position on moral virtues and expediency, in contrast to other schools of thought, with compelling examples drawn from histories and literature of the ancient world.
