The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876. The novel is about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River in the fictional town of St. Petersburg during the 1840s.
Hannibal, Missouri, where Tom lived as a boy inspired him to write the story; an adventurous story that Tom Sawyer often shared with his friend, Huckleberry Finn. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a masterpiece and was the best-selling of Twain's works during his lifetime.
In the novel, Mark Twain portrays Tom Sawyer as an imaginative and mischievous boy that lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother, Sid, in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. The adventures begin when Tom plays hooky from school on Friday, gets in a fight and dirties his clothes. As punishment, Tom's Aunt Polly makes him whitewash the fence the following day, on Saturday.
Since Tom has other plans, which don't include working, he cleverly persuades his friends to give him small treasures for the privilege of whitewashing the fence. The next day, at Sunday School, Tom swaps these treasures for tickets given out for memorizing Bible verses and uses the tickets to claim a Bible as a prize and when attempting to show his knowledge of the Bible, he becomes embarrassed when he incorrectly states that David and Goliath were the first two disciples.
Later on in the story, Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town. He persuades Becky to get "engaged" to him, but the romance turns sour and is short-lived when she learns that Tom has been "engaged" before to a girl named Amy Lawrence. Tom then embarks on another adventure. This time it's a trip during the night to the graveyard with Huckleberry Finn to try out a "cure" for warts. While at the graveyard, Tom and Huckleberry Finn witness the "half-breed" Injun Joe Scared murder Dr. Robinson. Scared, they run away from the murder scene and swear a blood oath not to...
