"A Gentleman of Courage: A Novel of the Wilderness" by James Oliver Curwood is, at its core, a novel of love and adventure in a French-Canadian pioneer village on Lake Superior in the 1890s. As a fugitive from justice, Donald McRae has managed to hide out for a couple of years in the Canadian wilderness. Donald sends his only child, Peter, to seek refuge in the small village of Five Fingers while Dad continues his run from the long arm of the law with no promise they'll ever be reunited.
