'Brother Copas' is a . It was written by Arthur Quiller-Couch, who is best-remembered today for penning 'The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1900'. The story unfolds by introducing us to the Master of St. Hospital-by-Merton, Eustace John Wriothesley Blanchminster. He is a distinguished-looking, saintly old man who takes pains with his annual sermons and verifies references and quotations. At the beginning of the story, he is critical of his secretary, Mr. Simeon, who has made a fair copy of the sermon but has made a mistake in Greek accent. This makes Mr. Simeon worried about the possibility of losing his job.
