Description
The Devil's Pool was originally published in 1846. It is the first in a series of pastoral novels by Sand that evoke the peasant world of the author's home region of Berry. The series also includes François the Waif, Little Fadette, and The Bagpipers. The Devil's Pool is a 19th century love story between the older widower Germain and the young shepherdess Marie who must navigate the traditions of the peasant society of Berry. The Devil's Pool was an instant success on publication and has remained one of Sand's best-known novels. It has been the subject of several adaptations for theatre, film, and television. This republication includes an introduction by Edward Jones giving an overview of Sand's life and notable works.
