FAILING FORWARD With Your Felony

Over 95% of all those in prison will be released one day. Coupled with that daunting reality is the fact that approximately 83% are rearrested within 9 years and more than half within the first 5 years, according to our latest research (Sawyer and Wagner, 2023). This should instill enough motivation in us all to analyze our traditional methods of reforming prisoners while devising other plausible methods, such as education and transformational programming. Policymakers and criminal justice practitioners scramble to dissect, replicate, bottle, and distribute that which a small percentage of us (about 17%) have experienced through the perils and persecution of the prison industrial complex: a successful reintegration. This book serves as a manual for both a pre- and post- release from incarceration for the one reentering and the supporters who will play a crucial role in the success, or failure, of the one returning. It hopes to better prepare those with felonies for the tangible and intangible barriers to reentry based on a proven path towards success through the invariable failures that are inherent within any process of achievement, including prison reentry. To expect those reintegrating not to fail is to expect them not to try, hence, to not pursue success. The principles outlined within this book challenge the traditional approach to prisoner reintegration.

How To Succeed In a 'Check the Box' World

While most criminologists know simply theory, Mario F. Bueno II. knows both theory and application as he has successfully reintegrated back into society being released from prison on January 22, 2014, after serving nearly 20 consecutive years from the age of 16. Holding a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Michigan, a bachelors of science in accounting from Wayne State University, a published Ronald McNair Scholar, and set to graduate with a Masters in Financial Accounting from Wayne State University in 2024, Mario has worked for both the Michigan House of Representatives and the City of Detroit Mayors office, coupled with servicing as a vendor for Michigan's juvenile prison reentry and the Michigan Department of Corrections prison reentry as both a transformative trainer and peer mentor. In addition, Mario is a Special Correspondent for PBS One Detroit and is owner/operator of American Dream Accounting & Taxes, LLC., a Technical Assistance Provider for Michigan Women Forward, New Economy Initiative, and Invest Detroit. Mario is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a tax preparer and e-file transmitter, successfully managing a portfolio of clients as he pursues his American Dream, albeit failing forward with his felony.
