Interviewing children who have been sexually abused requires sensitive, responsive interviewers and an interview structure that fits children's level of development. Sensitivity is important because most children who have experienced child sexual abuse are traumatized and the interview itself can be stressful. The interviewers gather information about the nature of the abuse and the identification of the abusers. Any hint that the interviewer suggests answers to the children threatens the quality of the interview and therefore any evidence they interview may identify.
This article describes an interview protocol used to gather evidence for court cases when children have been sexually abused. Competence in forensic interviewing of children requires in-depth training. The present article is an overview that parents and professionals will find helpful in preparing children for the interview and, also, for preparing themselves.
