The Zodiac Killer murdered five people between December of 1968 and October of 1969. The murders were followed by letters to the news media demanding publication of his threats and other written material, on pain of further killings. As the Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski murdered three people and injured many more, over a period beginning in May of 1978 and continuing through April of 1995. These were not "serial killers," as the term is commonly under­stood, but deeply disaffected individuals, each with an axe to grind against the world. They moved in the same locations at the same time. They teased the authorities with cryptic clues as to their whereabouts and motives. Each killer identified himself with a graffiti consisting of lines within a circle. Both made references to opera.
Their methods were different, but their madness was the same.
