Description
This historical novel has been read by enough Boomers to become a hit. 'If Bullfrogs Had Wings' is set in West Virginia in 1957 when family and friends were vital. Readers quickly relate and bond with Keith DeLong and best friend, John 'Flea' Summers, two normal teens growing up in a rugged coal-mining town. They make a major decision to spend summer vacation outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine instead of around a dark, dingy coalmine. Without their parents' knowledge they apply for caddy jobs at the Bluefield Country Club. This move does not set well with Keith's coal-miner father. Flea is struck with a serious illness. Keith becomes swamped with decisions and heartaches, attempting to flood his dreams. This story will pull you in and have you rooting for these to teens to overcome life's obstacles. You do not have to play or like golf to enjoy this story. Golf is only the vehicle used to carry this tale. This is Book 1 of 'The McComas Trilogy, followed by 'Out of the Rough' and 'A Golden Round'. All three novels are suitable for all ages, especially those of us who recall the late '50's and how life was back then. "Thank you for spending your time to read my works. An honest review on Amazon would be welcomed. Keep smilin'... "
Review by Larry Webb, Young Adult author:
Lee, I just finished "If Bullfrogs Had Wings." Loved it! I grew up in the 50s and remember well our feelings of misuse, abuse, etc. because we couldn't go to the county fairs, circuses, movies etc. because of the polio scourge before Jonas Salk perfected the polio vaccine. Our parents just plain wouldn't let us. Anyway, loved the book and all of its life lessons. Five minutes after finishing, I downloaded its sequel "Out of the Rough".
