Description

Bret Harte was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He is a influential American writer with local color. He and Mark Twain are together known as the ¡°master of style description of the western United States¡± . Shaping the character of women is a major highlight of short stories of Harte. He describes the changing image of women, of different temperament, as well as women's lives and emotional experiences as the theme of the novel. Female characters in the novel can be divided into two categories. One is indulgent, living rough; the other is living in the materialistic world. In Mrs. Skaggs's husbands, the heroine belongs to the latter. She, a skittish woman, remarried several times, always very tragic outcomes. Overall, Harte's works of the image of women are full of personality, and prominent characteristics.
