Description

Irish Ancestors is a series of Books which takes Irish family names and tells the true stories of some of their most notable members together with some historical context.

This Book tells the Story of one Irish man of the Murphy clan, Michael Murphy who was born in 1837 in Cahir in County Tipperary Ireland. Like many young Irish men of that time Michael Murphy joined the British Army and served overseas in the service of the Empire. While serving in India he fought against the Indian rebels and for one particularly brave action he was awarded the Victoria Cross (or VC), the highest decoration for valour in the face of the enemy awarded to members of the armed forces in the British Army - hence the VC after his name. He also rose to the highest non-commissioned rank in his chosen military trade.
Later in his career Murphy was accused of theft from military stores, tried in court and subsequently jailed. The evidence suggests that Murphy may have been framed by a colleague who was both jealous of his success and biased against the Irish. This book does not attempt to judge Murphy's guilt but does tell the story of Michael Murphy and judges him a hero.

We also tell the story of the Indian Rebellion, a story that has parallels with Ireland the irony being that many of the British troops stationed in India were Irishmen.

This book is one of a series of titles about distinguished members of the Murphy clan. We hope that it adds to the understanding of Michael Murphy's life and achievements and the times he lived in.
