This is the story of an ordinary German middle class girl and the members of her family at the time the Nazis, under Hitler, took control of the country. Paula Rentka was thirteen years old in 1933 and lived under the rule of the Nazis for the next twelve years. As she grew from child into womanhood she observed how German Society was changing for the worst and became increasingly disenchanted, especially by the harsh treatment of the Jews and other minority groups. For a long time she could only observe, unaware that her family was in great danger, a secret kept from her by her parents. But eventually all was revealed and like thousands of other innocents they were drawn into into the Nazi's solution to what they termed 'the Jewish Question'and sent to the extermination camp - Auschwitz. Paula was a 'survivor type', stong of will, pragmatic and desperate to live. This is a story a story of love, of sacrifice and survival amidst the horror that was the Holocaust.
