Everyone knows that fairies exist only in fairy tales, even five-year-old Jamie Makemie, a boy living in rural southwestern Pennsylvania in the early 1960s. But a stroll one day in the woods behind his home changes his mind and his whole world when he falls unwittingly into a cavern of the fairy realm. There he encounters the fairies, their magic, their music and dancing, and their king, who tells Jamie that he is to be named the fairy king someday when he is grown.

Jamie struggles through lost love, mental illness, death of loved ones, and matters of faith and learns of a providential plan that he is destined to fulfill.
