Description
December 2012: A privately held U.S. company in contract with The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration launches the "P.A.S.T", a Particle Acceleration System Transporter. The announced mission is to study global weather patterns. A few weeks later... Earth Burns.
The PAST's crew is witness to worldwide nuclear war below, and they set off on a nothing to lose voyage. Problem is, they don't know where to go. The science officer, Dr. Maxwell Board, sets a trajectory to use the magnetic field of a "black hole" to "Slingshot" the ship to the outer edge of the galaxy.
The only solution for their survival is to return to Earth after the radiation has decreased. They plot a journey that will return them to earth orbit. Moving at near the speed of light, the crew will age only a few years while their temporarily-abandoned planet ages thousands. If the voyage is successful, will time have healed all at home? A bigger question is, has any life down below survived, and if so... what? Aboard the "PAST" the only life was the crew. Well, that's not exactly true. There are all kinds of bacteria, eye lid mites, and who knows what else aboard. How will these life forms affect the "New Earth" creatures that have evolved in the five thousand years since "The Big Burn"???
Still on Earth, a few days before the departure of the PAST, Max's life long friend Noah Boisseau has gathered together "a wintering over party" in a remote valley near the Ellsworth mountain chain on the continent of Antarctica. Noah has been preparing the site to attempt the survival of the human race should the voyage of the PAST be unsuccessful. Will the small group of Noah's people avoid detection by the hundreds of thousands of initial survivors of the wars? Will they survive the approaching natural disaster that caused the war?
The knowledge that an asteroid storm would blanket the earth with dust, destroying the food supply world wide for several years, is what precipitated the war between nations. The CIA had concluded that destruction of the food supply would mean that for some of us to survive, most of the rest of the world would have to die first. No matter how much food was stockpiled by a government for it's people, the rest of the starving world would kill them all trying to take it. Unfortunately, the CIA also concluded that the KGB and other foreign government agencies would also realize these facts. It became a standing order that if a credible threat from this type of natural disaster were to be discovered, "Everybody but U.S. would have to die".
Will the PAST return to Earth? Will Noah's people survive into the future? Will Noah and Max meet again, in this world or another? Will you read this story? OK, how about watch the movie?
