Description

"This beautiful girl, that goes by no other name than Betsy, was formerly a retailer of apples, &c. She has lately, with three other ladies, sported her figure at Bath, and was there the reigning toast amongst the first bucks of the place... "

"In the time of the ancient Romans we are told that the fat paps of the sow where held a great dainty. For those that have a relish for such a repast we recommend Mrs. Wood, and can assure them, such paps as she possesses are seldom to be met with... "

"In regard to price, she [Miss C-rb-t ] has one fixed rule, she always measures a gentleman's 'may-pole' by a standard of 'nine inches', and expects a guinea for every inch it is short of full measure... "

Harris' List of Covent Garden Ladies is a directory of prostitutes working in 18th-century London's Covent Garden, then one of the capital's most notorious fleshpots. Although published as an annual directory from 1757 to 1795 only nine volumes have survived, those for the years 1761, 1764, 1773, 1774, 1779, 1788, 1789, 1790 and 1793.

This is an ebook version of the 1788 edition that has been annotated throughout to help explain some of the more obscure contemporary and classical allusions that appear in the text. Some of the spellings of common words have been standardised for the benefit of the modern reader (e.g. 'clothes' rather than 'cloathes') but as far as possible the electronic version is a faithful reproduction of the original.

Harris' List offers a unique insight into the colourful, bawdy sub-culture of Georgian London with detailed descriptions of the ladies of the 'Cyprian train'; their circumstances, habits, keepers and customers. It can be enjoyed by the casual reader but is also a valuable reference for anyone interested in this period of history.

An ebook version of the 1793 edition of Harris' List is also available in this series.

The cover illustrations are by Thomas Rowlandson.
