Morana is aware that the appearance of her Imaginary Friend is probably a temporary subconscious manifestation of her recent grief but she also knows that schizophrenia tends to run in families - and Morana's mother is positively psychotic.
Estranged from her unrequited love, Police Chief Harry Black, on account of him thinking she seduced him (and thereby sullied the precious memory of his poor dead wife), Morana is nevertheless drawn into the murder investigation of two young women discovered wide-eyed, naked, their pubic hair shaved - but without a single murderous mark upon their perfect bodies. Suspiciously, though, when Morana witnesses the grisly murder of a third girl, she chases the murderer into the woods - only to be found, the next morning, covered in the dead girl's blood and clutching the weapon that killed her.
Being framed for serial murder, however, is the least of Morana's worries as, when her Imaginary Friend suggests that in order to save the lives of more potential murder victims Morana ought to physically eliminate - that is, actually do away with - all the murder suspects, Morana doesn't realise just how disturbed she's become - and agrees.
