Description
Why do some things change and others remain static? This issue explores the ever-evolving, the work in progress. We examine creative expression, such as painting and writing where we begin with a concept, sketch an outline, fill in details, rework it endlessly; eventually, we tear ourselves away and proclaim the work finished. The issue also explores the process of being "in progress" -- how the Torah remains stable and yet allows us to continue to draw new lessons from its texts; the institution of the synagogue as something that has not been, nor ever will be, fixed in stone; and Israel as a work in progress. We look at the nonprofit and foundation sectors who shed light on the trajectory of an organization's growth, its momentum and, sometimes, its decline.
This month's issue looks at what is fixed and permanent and what is in flux. When is fixedness crucial and healthy, and when is it an indication of dogmatism, even close-mindedness? Which part of change is precious and valuable, and which part is extraneous or harmful? How can we best understand ourselves as works in progress, and how can that open us to seeing the world around us differently?
