Description
(Previously published as Blood Calls by Charles D. Shell.)And who says politics aren't exciting?
Of all the possible ambassadors for the dragon-riding country of Denza, Corbin is the one no one expected -- Corbin included. He likes his drink almost as much as he likes chasing skirts, and tends to draw just about every other dragon rider's ire. See, Corbin's personality doesn't just leave much to be desired, but he's also a blood mage -- one of the more feared and misunderstood magics around. Worse, his dragon, Blood, is considered demon-spawn due to his bright red coloring and hellfire breath, and by all accounts, shouldn't have lived past his hatch day.
When Corbin gets tossed into jail again for his drunken antics, his uncle steps in with a last-ditch ultimatum to get Corbin to shape up: to be the ambassador to the country of Sunal or else. Corbin, naturally, resents the idea, and Blood is none too quiet about voicing his opinion.
The nice thing about being posted in Sunal, though, is that it'd be quiet and peaceful. Afterall, what sort of political drama could such a backwards, sleepy country get into? At least, so Corbin thinks. As he settles into his new post, he starts to make friends of the locals and makes a fool of himself while trying to court a young woman named Ryanna from afar.
But then war breaks out for Sunal, leaving ever-neutral Denzan Corbin with a choice: help his new-found friends and adopted country, or head back to Denza. But for all of Corbin and Blood's faults, they're loyal and for a challenge, and as it turns out, their uncanny ability of bringing mayhem, magic, and dragonfire wherever they go may be just what Sunal needs to turn the invasion in their favor and save half the continent in the process.
But now there's that pesky problem of politics. Can Corbin find a loophole that won't bring his country down and drown Sunal in an occupation?
And more importantly, can he figure it out before it's too late?
