Description

Noted television series expert Alan Shapiro analyses the TV show "Lost" in relation to famous flights and crashes in the history of aviation: Yuri Gagarin's first manned spaceflight in 1961, John Glenn's first orbital spaceflight by an American in 1962, and the crash of terrorist planes into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. At the center of Shapiro's philosophical reading of "Lost" is the concept of "the crash out of globalization and into the world," an idea related to Martin Heidegger's notion of "the world worlding," which he developed in the essays "The Age of the World Picture" and "The Origin of the Work of Art." The book also contains a discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," which Shapiro sees as a key literary text for understanding "Lost."
