Description

In real life, and these novels, Elizabeth's and Nicholas's childhood summer romances were now at an end. Circumstances beyond their control had done part of the damage, but trusted figures intent on abusing that trust steered the course of their lives away from one another onto carefully chosen paths. Nicholas has been drafted into the war effort and will not see her again for Grade 12 or her freshman year. But Charles, her mother's choice, will be there for her! He's a rich, spoiled young man, used to getting what he wants -- and he wants Elizabeth! Nicholas and Lizzie are in a state of shock! How can so many beautiful memories and feelings simply be discarded? They've never uttered the word "love" directly to each other, but they may as well have! Can their love survive all of these challenges? Will Nicholas meet someone else while he's in the air force? To try and limit the damage to their childhood romance, Elizabeth, in their most desperate moment, surprises him (and her mother) by inviting Nicholas to visit her at her home, just before he enters the air force in order to shorten their time apart. Before the mother can protest, Nicholas accepts. The only option Constance now has is to find a way to ruin that plan. There was but one small hope left -- Elizabeth had made a promise to Nicholas at their waterfall, that one day, if ever the need arose, she would grant him one last chance to remind her of the special connection that existed between them. Fate, it turned out, conceded as much, granting Nicholas one last chance by placing before him an opportunity to win the game with a "Hail Mary" pass, but with a crowd of only one cheering him on, and Elizabeth eagerly awaiting his pass, he'd just stood there, paralyzed by fear, holding back and not completing that pass. Meanwhile, Constance struggles with her conscience. Only two other people know what she did, but of those two, Elizabeth knows the most. The other uses the information to blackmail Constance. It would be many years before the pieces of the puzzle came together neatly. As the only innocent witness left alive, Elizabeth, wasn't talking about any of what she knew -- until one day when she really had no choice, but that happens much later in this series. For now we must be content with discovering what Elizabeth does know, whilst Constance must be content with believing that Elizabeth knew very little and understood even less! She was determined that it all remain as their secret, but to do so meant keeping tight control of her daughter. Jonathan won major concessions for these 2nd editions -- the right to include some of the more private details of the real life love story, which once you understand his relationship to characters within his novels, was a rather tricky decision! But truth is important for this story and, as happened in real life, truth is much stranger (and more entertaining) than fiction! So some characters agreed to shed the comfortably safe veneers of "youthful innocence" they've enjoyed in his novels. So in this book, you'll be privy to a real poem and love letter from Nicholas to Elizabeth that just could turn the tide of the battle for Lizzie's heart... at least it would have if it had not been read by someone else, too -- Constance -- who with all the inside information she needed, now took possession of the strategic high ground in this battle for Lizzie's heart. She proceeded to stymie every attempt Nicholas ever made to contact or see Elizabeth, buying enough time for Charles to endear himself to Elizabeth -- to solidify their relationship past the point of no return. It was a hopeless feeling - confronted with the very real possibility that the most loving relationship they'd enjoyed to date in life, was finally over - not because they'd done anything wrong, but because others wanted it so! Constance's covert control of Elizabeth's life was now fast becoming absolute. Lizzie trusted her far too much, with very sad consequences for Nicholas & her.
