Cassidy pretended to listen. She always tried to be polite. But Mr Doughty was a bit boring.
"Here we are," he said and placed the tray on the coffee table. "You don't mind biscuits do you. I mean, oh, some young ladies think they're fattening, but, well, you, you are very lovely, I mean slim and pretty and well, one or two biscuits won't do any harm."
He had gone very red.
Cassidy smiled shyly, feeling a bit embarrassed. She shrugged her shoulders.
"I... I like biscuits," she said.
"Excellent," said Mr Doughty and sat down opposite her. He was wearing grey trousers and for a moment Cassidy, for some reason, stared at his crotch when he sat and opened his legs. She shuddered and thought she saw an erection in his pants. Her throat went dry. She reached for the drink and lubricated her throat and averted her eyes, gazing at the bookshelves that were crammed with boring accountancy and economic books, and then scanning the walls that were festooned in photographs of the Doughty family. There was one of Mr and Mrs Doughty on their wedding day. He was obviously about 20 years younger in the photo, but he still wasn't really handsome. Just plain and nice. Cassidy wouldn't have fancied him if they'd been closer in age, even.
"Well now," said Mr Doughty, "how is college for you? It's nice to have a chat with you, very nice you visit us, nice to see more of you, I mean, well, you know, you and I don't get much of a chance to chat, so, how is college?"
"Oh, it's OK," she said coyly, still smiling very sweetly.
"Would you like to be an actress after you finish the course?"
"Well, it's performing arts, so more like a singer really, a pop star, you know."
"Oh yes, very nice, I'm sure you have a lovely voice, yes, oh you'd make a lovely pop star, Cassidy, in those nice sparkly little - yes, well, you know... accounting is a very secure employment, and I've tried to encourage Jade and Michael, you know, to follow in my footsteps, but Jade, well, she fancies herself an actress, so what can you do but support your kids, eh?"
Cassidy smiled. She nibbled on a biscuit.
"I mean, some people think accounting is boring, but it's not, you see, it's very fascinating."
Cassidy was starting to feel a bit weird. She had clamped her thighs together. Her breasts burned. He was a sweet man, but Jade always moaned that he was embarrassing as a dad, making jokes, trying to be cool. But Mr Doughty was not cool. He was the opposite of cool. He was - not hot - she jerked, her cola spilled. Some of it splashed on her skirt.
"Oh dear," said Mr Doughty, leaping to his feet, "you've spilt your drink, let me... "
Cassidy froze with horror. He wasn't going to do what she thought he was about to do, was he? He was. He did...
