Description
That old song "The Vicar of Bray" describes how one clergyman kept adapting his politics and theology as politics and religion was continually changing 1670-1720. This lecture goes through the song verse by verse and explains the revolutionary changes to which people in England had to adapt during those years. Events dealt with here include: The Exclusion Crisis; The Revolution of 1688; the Hanoverian Succession.
The upshot of these changes was a massive increase in power for the great Whig landowners. The terms Whig and Tory are also explained (as they applied in the early eighteenth century).
This lecture is for everyone interested in British politics, in the Church of England, in the Glorious Revolution and in the British monarchy. I like to think that readers of English Literature will find it useful background to the Eighteenth Century.
