What others say about this book and author

"A western that my father in law would love. He was Louie la Amour, Zane Grey western fanatic and would have really enjoyed this one, it brought about fond memories."

"Those that know me know I don't give many reviews. But when I read a good one I like to let people know. The story has all the stuff to make it a good read. If you like western stories you won't go wrong on this one."

"I'm never disappointed with this author's writing. His familiarity with the west makes his stories pleasantly memorable."

Two Friends headed West After the War
Two men, Artie Longer and Ben Hayes, join forces heading west. Longer said this about his friend, Ben Hayes: "One minute, you're looking at a man who looks to be a gentle, mild-mannered dude just off the train, except for the black, holstered Colt at his side, then quicker than a big cat jumping on a calf, you're seeing a man whose eyes have turned as cold and frosty as a Montana January morning, and whose face has lost every sign of gentle. Everything about the man changes. I've seen some full-growed, battle-tough men back away from him, startled, and suddenly afraid at what they were looking at. It was as though they'd come suddenly on a hungry wolf who was looking at them as its next meal."

Old West Flooded with Battle-hardened Men
Men flooded the Old West after the Civil War looking to start a new life, leaving homes that had been destroyed in the war. Men and women settled themselves onto land that was empty, filed claims, built homes and began raising families. They were pioneers. Few of them left their guns behind. And, some carried their violent ways with them. These men, some outlaws, and many more just mean and hardened, were used to killing. The West need men as tough and as good with a gun as the outlaws who refused to back down, refused to surrender, refused to be intimidated, and refused to back down.

A Soldier and former Texas Ranger
Ben Hayes was such a man. He had been a soldier. He understood war. His view about fighting the outlaws and such was summed up in a remark he made: "The easiest way to end a war is if the other side surrenders. And if they don't, then you just kill them until there's no one left to fight."

After the Civil War, Ben Hayes spent time riding for the Texas Rangers, then as a cowboy and a hunter for ranches down near the Brazos and often was hired to chase rustlers across the border. Artie spent his years as a cowboy chasing longhorns through Texas and up to Kansas. The two became friends and decided California was the place to see.

War on the Red Mountain
While in Arizona, the two men came onto a rancher and his daughter and her small son who desperately need some help, on their ranch, so they volunteer. Colonel William J. Harken and his daughter, Mary, who'd recently lost her husband own the ranch. She has a small boy, Billy. They learn that a local rancher, Jacob Jarvis, has hired gunmen and has managed to intimidate several of the small ranchers into selling. Jarvis' hired gunmen managed to intimidate several small ranchers into selling. He'd threatened Harken and made it clear to several in the community that he wants Mary as well as the ranch.
The two friends decide to stay, Hayes because of an encounter with one of Jarvis' hired gunmen. Longer stayed to fight also, but for an added reason. He'd fallen in love with Mary.

Old Fashioned Western Fiction Story
This is one of those stories that are in keeping with the tradition of Louis L'Amour. Glover says that he was "heavily influenced" by L'Amour's writings, and it shows in his stories.
