Este volumen reúne cuentos de Primo Levi: Historias naturales (1966), Defecto de forma (1971), El sistema periódico (1971), Lilit y otros relatos (1975), Última Navidad de guerra (2000) y Cuentos dispersos, publicados póstumamente e inéditos en España hasta 2009. Como afirma Marco Belpoliti en su introducción, Primo Levi no encaja en ninguna categoría preestablecida. Durante mucho tiempo, la crítica ni siquiera lo consideró un verdadero narrador. Las razones de este error son varias. Era considerado el testigo por excelencia y, además, su modo de contar, sus poco comunes novelle, contradecían las taxonomías tradicionales: es un narrador híbrido, impuro, espurio, un verdadero centauro del cuento, mitad narrador realista mitad narrador fantástico. Los críticos más atentos comprendieron inmediatamente que entre los cuentos de Primo Levi, los más propiamente de ciencia ficción, entre sus «bromas» y las páginas dedicadas al Lager existía un estrecho parentesco. El propio Levi lo sabía. Ya en las primeras entrevistas advierte: «No, no son historias de ciencia ficción, si por ciencia ficción se entiende "futurismo", la fantasía futurista barata. Estas historias son más posibles que muchas otras».
