John R. Rice (1895 - 1980) was an evangelist, pastor and editor of The Sword of the Lord. At the end of his life, his staff found that over 20,000 people had written him to say that they had found Christ through Rice's writings. His preaching and writing are straightforward, Bible-based and easy to follow.

Rice also stands out as an early supporter of Billy Graham. In 1948, Rice said that Graham could be the next D. L. Moody, not realizing how prophetic his words were. His publication The Sword of the Lord also garnered support for Graham in the 1940s and 50s.
